MINDFULNESS FOR WELL BEING

"Do you have the patience to wait till your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving until the right action arises by itself? " Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching

Mindfulness is an ancient method of cultivating non-judgmental awareness in the present moment, from moment to moment. Feeling out of balance in your life? By participating in our program you can learn effective skills for dealing with the stresses of everyday life. This course is designed to teach participants body and mind awareness techniques, such as meditation and yoga, to reduce stress and improve overall well-being. Using Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) techniques, participants will learn practical methods to foster insight and awareness into their own ways of responding vs. reacting to stress, pain and illness, to cultivate happiness and well-being. This program is based on the methods of Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center more than 29 years ago. It was featured on the Bill Moyer’s special, Healing and the Mind. The evidence-based program has been widely researched and found to be effective for many participants.

MBSR offers an integrative approach to wellness, which complements standard medical treatment. In the more than 29 years since its development, MBSR programs have helped thousands of participants in the U.S. and throughout the world, effectively reduce symptoms of stress such as high blood pressure, anxiety, panic, depression, chronic pain, sleep disturbances, migraines, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, and digestive disorders. Cancer patients undergoing treatment, AIDS patients, and others experiencing major life changes have found MBSR to be grounding and supportive during difficult times.

If you are experiencing symptoms of stress due to depression, divorce, family issues, job demands or job loss, burn out, fatigue, bereavement, over- or under-eating, worry and frustration, you can take this Program to learn healthy ways of responding to stress. Graduates have reported benefits in decreased physical and psychological symptoms, improved self-esteem and a renewed enthusiasm for life.

What is involved in the Program?
MBSR is an integrative approach to wellness which complements standard medical treatment. Class sessions include gentle body movement, guided mindfulness meditations, and group discussions. Participants will practice mindfulness meditation and movement at home during the week using CDs and a workbook provided by the instructor.

MBSR classes are 8 weeks in length and meet for 2 1/2  hours each week, with an all day Saturday session in week 6. There is a required 2 hour free introductory session to answer any questions you may have, and determine if the program is right for you. You will learn life skills in relaxation and awareness that can be used every day to help you feel more aware and balanced. Interpersonal communication skills are cultivated in small and large group settings. You are encouraged to develop your practice by utilizing the course workbook and using the guided mindfulness practice CDs daily.
